Attorney at Law, Mark A. Douglas has offered his candidacy for the next City of Sunrise Commissioner, Group A, in November 2016. Mark, his wife and two wonderful boys have resided in the City of Sunrise, for the past 15 years. His children both attend public schools in the City and he is proud to mention that his oldest is a Quarterback on the Sunrise Gators Football team!
Mark earned a Certificate in Business Studies, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with honors, and later attended Florida International University College of Law where he graduated with a Juris Doctorate in law in 2006. While attending Law School, he was a distinguished member of the Board of Advocates, representing the School in ABA Regional negotiating competitions, was named to the Dean’s list of scholars, worked as a Certified Legal Intern at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office and also as an Intern at the Miami Public Defenders office. Mark was also president of the Black Law Students Association.
After Law School, he accepted a position as a Criminal Prosecutor at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, Miami, Florida, where he prosecuted hundreds of criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to serious felony charges. For the past decade Mark has provided legal services to a diverse client base of individuals and businesses through his private law practice using a mix of litigation and strong negotiating skills to solve their myriad legal issues. He is also a licensed Realtor and small business owner.
Mark has always shown a commitment to public service as demonstrated by his involvement in Student Government while in law School and his work as treasurer of the Jamaican American Bar Association. He has rendered service to his fellow community members by serving as a director on several Condominium Boards. In fact, for the last eight years he has served as the President of the Condominium Board in the community in which he currently resides.
Additionally, within the wider community, Mark has served on the City of Sunrise small Business advisory Board and chaired the Bicycle and Pedestrian advisory Board for two terms during which time a master plan was created, presented to and was adopted by the City Commission to guide the development and deployment of infrastructure to achieve Bicycle and Pedestrian friendly status for the City. Currently, he serves on the City’s Board of Adjustment reviewing applications for zoning variances by businesses and individuals.
Mark has a wealth of knowledge, solid experience and well developed management skills to bring to the leadership of the City of Sunrise. As an Attorney, Businessman, Husband and Father, he has the all the tools to bring tremendous value to his community. It is on this basis that he seeks the support of the good Citizens of Sunrise to be their next City Commissioner.
